Introduction
This programme aims to give students a sensitive insight into the human response to health and illness. We aim to foster highly developed analytical skills and leadership potential. The programme integrates academic study and clinical practice throughout the course. Our graduate nurses demonstrate excellent clinical competence.
Why choose Edinburgh?
This programme enables you to work effectively in various settings and with other health professionals. We offer a challenging and rewarding course of study that explores many diverse areas including health, community and biology in the context of nursing care and nursing theory.
What you will be studying
Year 1
You will study Nursing 1, an introduction to the nature of nursing care and nursing theory (including applied biology), and Health and Society 1, an introduction to the sociological and psychological aspects of care. In addition, you can choose an outside course from another subject area. You will also gain clinical experience of primary care, mental health and acute medical nursing covering children’s health, maternity and learning disabilities.
Year2
You will study Nursing 2, exploring the patients’ experience of health problems and professional interventions, and Health and Society 2, developing understanding of key concepts such as health, quality of life and health promotion. In addition, you can choose an elective course from another subject area. You will also have adult medical and adult surgical clinical placement experience.
Year 3
You will develop knowledge of pathophysiology, the illness experience and associated nursing interventions. You will also take Research and Inquiry in Nursing, which advances understanding of research-based practice. You will have a choice of honours options and focus on practical experience in the areas of chronic illness, intensive support and community. In addition, you will have a clinical elective placement, which may be overseas.
Year 4
You will develop understanding of the management of health transitions and consolidate the knowledge, skills and attributes of the graduate nurse. You will have a choice of honours options and will also write a dissertation focusing on an area of specific interest. Your practice experience will include Care of the Older Person and a pre-registration placement.
How you will study
Courses are taught though a combination of lectures, tutorials, problem-based learning, reflective diaries, small-group work, seminars, computer-assisted learning and practicals. You will be assessed by a combination of coursework and exams. You will have the opportunity to spend an elective placement overseas at the end of Year 3.
Careers
Your employment prospects, as a nurse graduating from this programme, are excellent, and opportunities are wide-ranging. Most graduate nurses start their professional careers in clinical nursing. You will subsequently have many opportunities to specialise: for example, in intensive care, oncology or community nursing. Alternatively, you could advance your career by moving into education, research or management; or you could choose to work abroad in both developed and developing countries. Some graduates decide to take a further degree.
